plantbedsIf you’ve signed up for Pinterest, you know how easy it can be to imagine yourself as an incredible DIYer, capable of making 8-tiered cakes and constructing garden benches worthy of a Pottery Barn catalog. But be honest: how many of those projects have you actually tackled? Sure, it looks easy, but once you get down to the nitty-gritty and read those instructions, you suddenly realize you’ve never held a nail gun in your life and wouldn’t know where to begin even if you had.

According to Rafael Gallegos of Pasadena Lumber, DIY projects are actually big this summer and Pasadenans are getting in on the fun. Some popular projects this summer are planter boxes, picket fences and other household items and he and the team have gathered lots of tips to help blooming DIYers.

Gallegos says, “People come, they see something on the Internet, they try to match it. They try to do it themselves, to cut down on cost.”

In fact, the folks at Pasadena Lumber are so used to fledgling builders and want-to-be Pinterest masters seeking help with their projects, their shop is brimming with advice. For example, if you want to create a Redwood planter box, Gallegos tells us their shop sells high-quality 2×12 Redwood for about $4.50 a foot, while a store-bought planter could cost you anywhere from $200 to $300.

“Of course, a lot of customers don’t have the tools necessary to cut the wood to the correct size,” acknowledges Gallegos. “We also cut the wood for a lot of these people. It’s not a lot of these people have a bigger saw for like the 2×12 pieces of Redwood, so we cut it for them and they just pick it up.”

He also said that he tries to help people with ideas based on their budget. Not only can you get a chance to learn how to build those expensive looking flower boxes, the shop will also tell you how much wood you need, what type of wood you’ll need, and how to save a buck in the process.
